How to Get into the Christmas Spirit When you Just Aren’t Feeling it

I never know how I’m going to be feeling about Christmas each year. I mean, I always get annoyed when the stores put up their Christmas decorations before Halloween, but how am I really going to feel about Christmas? Am I going to have to fake the Christmas Spirit? Fake it ’til you make it, right? These tips and FREE printable lists can help you get in the Christmas spirit all season long.

Some years are harder than others when it comes to having the Christmas spirit. Maybe you’ve had a rough year financially, or are worried about health concerns or family members. It can be difficult to find the childlike joy in the holiday that everyone wants to have.

When you have children, this is an even bigger concern, because you want them to have the holiday they always have, and you don’t want them to worry about you and why you are feeling down.

Day 8 of Blogmas - Getting into the Christmas Spirit. What do you do when you're just not feeling it?

If you are struggling this year, there are a few things you can do to help you get in the mood for seasonal festivities. And you’re not really faking it, if you’re enjoying the activity while you do it.

  • Clean and Decorate Your House – Now, the cleaning part might not be fun for you, but having a clean house sure is. And if you are going to be (potentially) moving furniture around to make room for a tree and other decorations, it’s nice to have a clean house to start with. If you can’t manage to do it on your own, consider hiring someone to come in and do a deep clean.

  • Set up a Christmas Tree – Nothing says Christmas like a tree with soft lights glowing. Sit in front of the tree first thing in the morning or evening with no other lights on besides the trees. Your mood will immediately improve. Pull out your other decorations as well, especially those that have happy or special memories associated with them.

  • Watch Christmas movies – I always intend to watch ALL my favorites, but only get around to a couple. Make a date with yourself to watch as many as you can. Christmas movies all have a feel-good element to them, leaving you with a sense of peacefulness and happiness. Check out our list of favorite Christmas movies here. How many of them have you seen?

  • Listen to Christmas music – There are so many Christmas songs, and new ones come out each year. Like the movies, these songs just put you in a cheery mood. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite Christmas songs so you can make up a playlist.

Listening to Christmas music can help raise your spirits and put you in the Christmas Mood.christmas-songs-for-kids-1

  • Go to a special Christmas show – This can be a concert at your local high school, a play put on at the theater or even a Christmas carnival or tree lighting ceremony downtown. These events are full of people with Christmas Spirit, and it’s easy for it to rub off on you. If you can manage it, do several of these different things.

  • Find a Way to Give Back – This may be boxing up a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child or volunteering to ring a Salvation Army bell. It could be picking a child’s name from an Angel Tree or serving food at the soup kitchen. Whatever you like to do or fits your time and budget requirements, do it.

  • Go to a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service – The only years we’ve missed have been when we’ve had littles that were just too little, and would have bothered the entire congregation if we brought them. But the Christmas hymns, the Christmas story, the hushed feeling as the congregation lights their candles and sings “Silent Night” …this always gives me goosebumps and lots of feels. It’s the Christmas spirit, guys.

You don’t have to be Buddy the Elf in order to have Christmas spirit and enjoy the holiday. But you also don’t want to be the Grinch. And if you can barely get just above the Grinch, don’t worry; there’s always next year.

Ummmm. YES! Having a clean house is a game changer for me! And a clean house PLUS putting up Christmas decorations while watching Elf just makes me giddy thinking about it. 🙂

A clean house would be a good start. We go to a lot of toddler friendly things. A lot of what we do (and don’t do) is toddler based as far a decorating goes.

Usually what gets me in the mood is watching Christmas Vacation. That just kind of brings those holiday vibes to me.
