Family Friendly Christmas Movies to Enjoy this Holiday

Can watching movies be considered a tradition? I hope so, because we have a whole list our family loves to watch during the Christmas season. This year is lining up to be so busy, we’ve actually scheduled specific movies on our calendar to make sure we don’t miss watching some of our favorites (is that weird?)

We're Celebrating Blogmas! -Day 5- Our favorite family-friendly Christmas movies.

Anyway, I’ve pulled together a list of our family’s favorite Christmas movies of all time, in no particular order. Some of these are ones my husband and I watch without the kids, although I know a lot of kids who have seen them (I’ll make sure to tell you which ones those are, and why).

But I hope you save time this season to enjoy some good family fun times watching movies. Pop some popcorn or make some Christmas goodies to enjoy while you watch. This is one of those easy family traditions you an continue each year!

The first time I watched Elf, I didn’t really like it. The more I’ve watched it, however, the more I’ve liked it. We watch this movie with out bigs, and they love it. It’s one of our Must-See movies every year. Quotable Line: “I just like to smile; smiling’s my favorite!”

I LOVE this movie. It’s a classic that I feel everyone should watch at least once. It is a very long movie, however, so it doesn’t get watched every year. Quotable Line: “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets it’s wings.”

I like the classic version of this movie, from 1947. There is another version from the 90s that isn’t quote up to par. This is just such a classic movie with a great story. Quotable Line: “It’s not jut Kris that’s on trial, it’s everything he stands for. It’s kindness and joy and love and all the other intangibles.”

This is my all-time favorite Christmas movie. When I met my husband, he had never seen it. We fixed that our first Christmas together. I love that it’s got singing and dancing, with Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby. The double love story is sweet, and the clever quick dialogue keeps you awake. It’s a little long, but it’s totally worth it. Quotable Line: “Miss Haynes, if you’re ever under a falling building and someone offers to pick you up and carry you to safety, don’t think, don’t pause, don’t hesitate for a moment, just spit in his eye.” (There are so many favorite quotes, but this one makes me laugh every time!)

Love Love Love this movie! It all started back when I was a child and heard my dad laughing uproariously while watching this movie. The next day he watched it again, this time with all of us kids; it’s been a favorite ever since. Luckily, my husband grew up watching this too, so no arguments there about what our family’s favorite movie is. Quotable Line: “Ahh, smell those Christmas Trees. You can keep your channel number 5, just give me a whiff of the old lonesome pine. That symbol of brotherly love, that centerpiece that all mankind gathers around to share the cranberry sauce shaped like a can.”

We just watched this movie last night! It’s another favorite from back in my childhood. Do they even make movies like this anymore? Tim Allen is so funny as a man who takes on the mantel of Santa when the old Santa falls off his roof. There are so many funny one-liners in this movie, and I love the scene where he first sees Santa’s workshop. Quotable Line: “The Santa Clause: In putting on the suit and entering the sleigh, the wearer waives any and all right to any previous identity, real or implied, and fully accepts the duties and responsibilities of Santa Claus, in perpetuity to which some time the wearer becomes unable to do so, by either accident or design.”

This is the classic cartoon of the Grinch; I don’t like the live Jim Carey version at all. This is a short film, only 30 minutes long. It’s such a familiar story that kids love to see come to life. Quotable Line: “Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

This is another animated classic. At 30 minutes long as well, it can be watched at the same time as the Grinch. One year, my brother watched this every day. I’m not talking every day during December. I mean Every. Single. Day. Of. The. Year. Like, July people! He loved it that much. By the time Christmas rolled back around, the rest of us hated it, but we’re ok with it again now. Whew! Quotable Line: “He was made out of Christmas Snow and Christmas Snow can never disappear completely.”

This is a movie we don’t watch with the kids, although it’s only rated PG. I think they’d find it a little boring, or at least not as funny as we find it. And sometimes you just need a movie without the kids, you know? This movie also stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, and they make a hilarious married couple. Is it sad that my husband and I can see ourselves in them, somewhat? Quotable Line: “…as odd as it sounds, I didn’t think to ask the butcher where the chocolate was!”

This movie was released in 1970, but it’s stood the test of time. This movie is about an hour, maybe a bit more, but it’s great. It follows Santa as he grows up and tries to deliver toys after the Burgermeister Meisterburger outlawed them. Quotable Line: “But what would happen if we allall tried to be like Santa and learned to give as only he can give: of ourselves, our talents, our love and our hearts? Maybe we could all learn Santa’s beautiful lesson and maybe there would finally be peace on Earth and good will toward men.
